Day 7 (July 7, 2026): Okinawa’s Mobutu Peninsla


The Motobu Peninsula is in the Yanbaru region of Okinawa. It is surrounded by Nago Bay to the east, the Haneda Inland Sea to the north, and the East China Sea to the west. Its highest point is Mount Yae at 593 metres. The peninsula was the center of power for the kingdom of Hokuzan in medieval times and was the site of fierce fighting during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

Days 1-2 (July 1-2, 2026): School’s out, Canada’s 159, and we’re Asia bound!

It has been quite the school year for Pam.  No matter how tough the year, June 30th always sweeps it all under the rug, both the good and the not-so-good.  Most of it, of course, was good.  However, ending her 30 years with the Halifax Boys Honour Choir has brought a deeply emotional aspect to the school year wrap-up this year.  With all that as a backdrop, not to mention sheer exhaustion, once the last day of school was over, we burrowed into final prep mode for our long-awaited Asia trip.   The planning for this trip began almost a year ago.  Mongolia has long been on the radar.  Although the other countries tied to Mongolia for this tour morphed in the course of the planning (for example, it was originally supposed to be Belgium and Mongolia), it has always centered around Ulaanbaatar (capital of Mongolia) and the Gobi Desert.  But more on all that in days to come. Day 6 (July 6, 2026): Discovering Naha, Okinawa… in brutal heat and without a rental car!

As I start the blog entry for today, I must share a paraphrase of Lonely Planet’ s description of Okinawa: if Tokyo were a pie, take a slice of that pice, plunk it on a South Pacific island, add a dollop of Florida, and you have Okinawa!  Today proved that to be very accurate.  The reality of not having a rental car on such a large island really sank in when we woke with the sun this morning. At 106km long and with 1207 square kilometres, its sights are dispersed far and wide.  With a rental car, our plan had been to drive south to Naha, the main city, and explore that area on day one and then drive north to explore the national park on day two.  Using a mix of public transportation, taxis and walking, we are going to try to stick roughly to that plan.   We set out just before 9AM and caught a bus to the outskirts of Naha and launched into it all, taking in five major sights during the day.  In contrast to the cloudy and showery weather since our arrival in...

Day 3 (July 3, 2026): Nagasaki - a phoenix arising from the ashes

Nagasaki is surprisingly hilly! This geography actually helped the region when the atomic blast happened.  View of Mount Inasa from our hotel room. The two main rail lines into Nagasaki. Th Nagasaki trams are an icon of the city. And they are an incredibly efficient way of navigating Nagasaki. We used them all day long. A pass is only 600 yen ($5 CAD). Exploring the atomic bomb memorial aspect of Nagasaki  The bomb exploded 11:02 AM on August 9, 1945, three days after the bombing of Hiroshima. This is a reproduction shell of the bomb. The US military painted the bomb yellow and coated the seams in black sealant. This model shows the geography of the Nagasaki region. The port’s opening (to the south) is shown at the top of the photo. The bomb exploded over the pinkish flat area in the top center of the photo.
